Principal BI Developer – HR Analytics

The Principal BI Developer- HR Analytics is responsible for loading HR/employee information into Azure SQL Server, then building and maintaining queries to retrieve/transform data as a foundation for Power BI analytics dashboards and reports.  Using technical expertise, they will scrutinize data to ensure high quality, recognizing and identifying patterns. With extensive knowledge of data modeling techniques, a successful incumbent will design visualizations to assist the HR organization and business leaders with data-driven decisions. This role is also tasked with the administration of data warehouse such as Azure SQL Server.


  • Alongside technology groups, help architect data warehouse to house HR data, ensuring strict security guardrails enabling users to only view and extract data for which they are permissioned.
  • Extract data from various source systems and reports, identify corrupted data and indicate a correction, reorganize data in a readable format, and correct coding problems. 
  • Act as the primary resource for complex solutions within databases/data warehouse. 
  • Leverage statistical tools, analyze and interpret trends in complex data sets to diagnose opportunities for improvement and model future scenarios of action.
  • Develop business KPIs for the purpose of identifying trends and evaluating the success of the business’ initiatives. 
  • Recommend improvements, innovative solutions, and/or policy changes across HR platforms based on a keen understanding of technologies and HR processes.
  • Build project plans, ensure adherence to project schedules, and collaborate with leadership and stakeholders to set priorities and outline long-term reporting/analytics recommendations
  • By establishing user procedures, guidelines, and documentation, direct HRIS business analysts and functional HR stakeholders through use of the tools built, data quality processes, and visualization techniques.
  • Utilize excellent interpersonal skills when working with various customers and peers to accomplish expected outcomes via data housed in the data warehouse and displayed in analytical visualizations
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, IT or related field preferred; or equivalent work experience
  • 8+ years reporting/analytics experience, preferably with HR data, including requirements gathering/analysis, design, delivery within enterprise-wide systems such as SAP SuccessFactors, Workday, Oracle, PeopleSoft, and/or ADP
  • Technical:
    • Advanced competency in database management and security, as well as deep knowledge and experience with SQL. Azure SQL Server administration experience preferred.
    • Advanced competency gathering, collecting, transforming, processing, and modeling data; and examining and analyzing large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
    • Advanced knowledge of business intelligence, data integration, data warehousing, data modeling, databases, and technical aspects of BI tools
    • Advanced competency with MS Power BI, Tableau, or other advanced visualization tools
    • Advanced competency with Microsoft applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word
    • Proficiency developing ETL processes, techniques for data mining, and segmentation particularly using SQL
    • Proficiency creating efficient and reusable SQL code meant for the improvement, manipulation, and analysis of data
    • Proficiency with enterprise-wide systems such as SAP SuccessFactors (preferred)
    • Experience with R, DAX, Python and other programming languages is preferred
  • Must be a self-starter/take initiative
  • Ability to work with ambiguity, determine appropriate steps to progress within the uncertainty.
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to work under pressure, with a proven ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects, handling production support needs, and changing priorities
  • Acute attention to detail and customer service skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information responsibly
  • Ability to collaborate within a team environment, build effective relationships across organizations and deliver desired results
