Job Description

Zurich North America is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our growing Data & Analytics Team based out of our North American headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois with a hybrid work schedule available.

This Senior position will join a team that uses that uses a combination of analytics and advanced data science techniques (e.g., natural language processing, machine learning models, artificial intelligence techniques) to solve our business partners most pressing problems and help our customers better understand their risks.  This person will work within one of our cross functional Agile teams (Data Analysts, Data Engineers, and Data Scientists) that support various business units within the organization to achieve impact. 

In this role you will:

  • Lead the effort to develop & validate supervised & unsupervised learning models, create machine learning and AI models, and use other statistical techniques to solve business problems
  • Lead the effort to develop a strategy on how to use the model/solution to generate impact
  • Collaborate business stakeholders to understand their challenges and develop an analytical solution that creates business impact
  • Lead the effort for team to democratize data by consolidating, integrating, cleansing, and minimally curating operational production system data and external data for insight generation
  • Perform exploratory analysis which includes understanding the key statistical metrics on data columns, determining the granularity of the data, & assessing any related merge keys for combining the data
  • Develop a production, end to end solution for deployment, working closely with Data Engineers
  • Develop a monitoring framework to ensure the tool is performing as intended
  • Provide leadership to support the development and maintenance of best practices
  • Lead the effort to support stakeholders after deployment to ensure impact is achieved
  • Mentor other data scientists to improve technical solutions & work with the Chief Product Owner & other key members of the Agile team on strategic planning


Basic Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 7 or more years of experience in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 5 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 5 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 3 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • PhD in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 0 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area 


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics, or other relevant STEM degree
  • Expert at applying Machine Learning, AI, and other statistical techniques that solve business problems
  • Significant experience with programming and data tools such as R, Python, & SQL
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to develop innovative ideas that fit into the business processes to achieve impact
  • Significant experience in preparing data and/or developing insights for use in business decisions
  • Advanced problem-solving skills, including the ability to work with open ended business problems & develop an innovative solution proactively
  • Leadership experience developing technical, innovative solutions & quickly iterating based on feedback from stakeholders
  • Work independently to push the team in developing new ways to solve problems using data
  • Prior insurance experience solving business problems
